The Fairfield Circuitry Placeholder Bucket Brigade Reverb is an analogue reverb pedal that sits between classic mechanical reverbs and modern algorithmic designs. Instead of recreating conventional digital ambience, it uses an analogue circuit to realise a digital reverb concept, producing spaces that feel both familiar and unusual. The effect can reveal distinct echoes within its reflections, giving it a character that sometimes drifts toward delay. The entire signal path is analogue, so a small amount of noise and texture is part of the sound.
The circuit is built around three independent analogue delay lines using bucket brigade devices, mixers, VCAs and simple filters. These delays form a feedback delay network based on a topology known as a Householder reflection matrix. In this design each delay feeds into the others rather than into itself, allowing dense reflections to build quickly even with only three delay stages. The result is a reverb that develops rapidly and feels lively and organic.
This architecture allows Placeholder to cover a wide range of spatial textures. Depending on the settings it can suggest small reflective rooms, tiled bathrooms, plate style tones or hollow hall like spaces. Shorter delay times move into tight ambience and subtle flanging territory, while longer times can reach slapback style reflections.
All parameters are controlled with fully variable knobs rather than presets, allowing direct control over the reverb environment. Size sets the base delay time and determines the scale of the space. Ratio adjusts the relationship between the three delay lines, changing the density and timing of reflections. Tone acts as a tilt filter centred around 500Hz, shifting the balance between warmth and brightness. Decay controls the feedback level of the network, ranging from short reflections to long resonant tails that can reach self oscillation.
Subtle digital control adds gentle modulation to each delay line, keeping the reflections moving and preventing the sound from becoming static. The result is a distinctive analogue reverb with depth, character and plenty of room for experimentation.
