The Baldwin Burns Nu Sonic bass is like a hybrid between a Fender Mustang and Jazz Bass. It has the short 30″ scale length and compact size of a Mustang Bass, but with the dual pickup configuration and controls of a Jazz Bass. What you end up with is an extremely comfortable instrument with a huge variety of tonal options. It weighs in at only 6.1 lbs which is significantly lighter than even most guitars. The tone is very punchy and even. It is wired like a jazz bass but with a pickup selector. The neck position is warm and similar to a P-bass tone. The bridge position is bright and provides tones similar to a danelectro 6 string “tic tac” bass. The middle position is very versatile and allows you to find the perfect balance between the two pickups.
This one got the full restoration with a fresh refret from our neighbors at R. Hyde custom basses. Almost all of these came from the factory wired incorrectly, Ryan fixed the issue and replaced the 0.1uF cap with a 0.047uF cap for a brighter and more balanced tone. This is likely the best sounding and playing Nu Sonic bass available on the market. These little basses are some of most the underrated in the world of vintage guitars.
