Sonic Evaluation
Man, this ’63 reissue Country Western from the Murphy Lab is one sweet ride! As far as wooden steeds go, it’s got giddyup aplenty, with tons of volume and punch on tap. It’s magnificently responsive, with deep, woody bass response (“woody” meaning that it produces a strong, rib-rattling fundamental tone) to go with rich, warm midrange and sweet sparkling trebles. That dry bass response makes sure this guitar sounds powerful but well-balanced, with no mud within 300 feet. Perhaps the most stunning part of this guitar is its attack, though. It responds immediately to your touch with a strong detailed percussive quality, but that doesn’t quite do it justice. You hear every nuance of the pick or finger, but with all the rough edges sanded off so that it always has a pleasant, musical quality. Even at high volumes, I couldn’t make this guitar splat out. Instead I was rewarded with this wonderful bite that never sounds harsh–kind of like when a dog chomps on another dog’s head to say “You are my friend.”Though this guitar’s marvelous responsiveness helps it speak with a robust voice even at low volumes, it shines even more when you play with vigor and enthusiasm. It’s so loud, your bass player may ask you to turn down! Its clear, powerful voice reverberated through our whole store as I annoyed my coworkers with its thunderous tone.I loved playing this guitar, and I have no doubt it will bring you as much joy as it brought me!
